Branstad still has work to do with conservatives
from the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier
More than a month after former Gov. Terry Branstad secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, some Cedar Valley conservatives still aren't sure he's their guy.
Their reservations highlight an ideological split among potential GOP voters that pits moderates against conservatives that may factor into the election. But those same skeptics say they could be assuaged if Branstad articulated what they feel is a traditionally Republican message.
"Terry can't sit on the fence. Terry has to be very vocal," said Kitty Rehberg, a former state senator from Rowley.
Many Cedar Valley conservatives worry that Branstad isn't as committed to issues like cutting government spending or banning same-sex marriage in the state as they'd like. That's especially true when it comes to the latter concern.
