Members of Fred Phelps' anti-gay, anti-Semitic Westboro Baptist Church will return to Iowa on July 24 to picket at three sites: A general “God Hates Iowa” rally at ISU, protesting the Iowa Supreme Court decision granting gay couples the freedom to marry; The Jewish Historical Society in Ames; and Marshalltown's opening performance of "The Laramie Project.” Phelps is portrayed in the play.
Best-known for picketing soldiers' funerals, Phelps' church boasts 71 members, 60 of whom are related to him. According to the Marshalltown Times-Republican, eighteen members have signed up for the Iowa trip. For more information about his visit to Iowa this week, see the article in the Iowa Independent.
Counteract Phelps' negative message by taking part in One Iowa's virtual phone bank! We want to make 2,500 calls to target districts in two hours, and we're short of our 100-volunteer goal, so please sign up now. The phone bank will take place on July 23 from 5:30-8 p.m., the day before Phelps' visit, and you can participate from the comfort of your own home. Sign up today and we'll send you all the details!
