Our Work in Focus March Madness Success!

Ryan Crane Regional Organizer

We had a great response to our March Madness phone bank! Over three days we made over 2000 dials and collected nearly 600 legislative postcards in support of marriage equality! Thanks to all the volunteers who joined us and helped make these efforts such a success. Over the next few months, we'll be calling on everyone to make marriage equality a priority in their lives by giving what they can of their time and resources. A decision in the Varnum v. Brien case could be only weeks away! We'll need everyone on board to secure and sustain equality for all Iowans!

Coalition Partner Focus

One Iowa is working in coalition with partners statewide to achieve marriage equality in Iowa. From time to time, we’ll feature the marriage equality activities of these coalition partners. This week, we’ll focus on the efforts of I’M for Iowa and their outreach to communities of color.

Civil Rights Leader Mandy Carter to Visit Iowa

On March 11th, I’M for Iowa is pleased to welcome Mandy Carter to the state for a series of events to highlight African American support for marriage equality. Since 1968, Mandy Carter has been one of the nation's leading African-American lesbian activists. Mandy was a founding board member of the National Black Justice Coalition, a civil rights organization of concerned black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-gender individuals and allies dedicated to fostering equality. (link to complete bio)
“Civil marriage between same-sex couples IS very much a matter of concern to our African-American community. Full equality is the right answer. We cannot go back to the days of separate and unequal. We should not render invisible the many African-American leaders and families who have spoken out in support of this issue loudly and clearly, and who should not be ignored or dismissed by the right-wing.” - Mandy Carter
Along with the public events, Mandy will be meeting with members of the African American community in Iowa to discuss the importance of marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. Please join Mandy Carter and I’m for Iowa for the following events: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 7:00 PM Welcome Reception at the Ritual Café 1301 Locust St, Des Moines Friday, March 13, 2009 5:30 PM Visit to One Iowa's Happy Hour: RSVP! Graze - West Des Moines 5513 Mills Civic Pkwy, Ste. 100 Friday, March 13, 2009 7:00 PM Houseparty at Ed and Lynn Fallon’s 752 16th St., Des Moines

In the News

Feb. 26 Mac's World Replay One Iowa Executive Director, Carolyn Jenison and Interfaith Alliance Board Member Rev. Matt Mardis-Lecroy of Plymouth Church discuss the issue of marriage equality in Iowa. March 3 Mason City Globe Gazette Guest View: Changing God’s standards for marriage is harmful I have reflected on your editorial of Feb. 18 entitled, “Same-sex marriage proponents should keep up their efforts,” and particularly the statements therein that “support for same-sex marriage and belief in the teachings of the Bible are not mutually exclusive ideas.” March 3 Drake Digital: Proposed Marriage Laws Attract Attention Diebel also says that if the Supreme Court were to overturn the ban on gay marriage, he would be open to marrying couples in his church and that his congregation is also accepting of that idea. *We want to know what you're reading!
