Marriage Equality Bill Filed in State Senate! Move encouraging ahead of Supreme Court ruling

State Senator Matt McCoy filed a bill in the Iowa State Senate this week that would clear the way for same-sex partners to marry in Iowa. The move comes as the Iowa Supreme Court ruling in the Varnum v. Brien marriage case could only be weeks away and demonstrates a growing willingness by elected officials to speak out in favor of equality.

One Iowa applauds Senator McCoy for introducing this important legislation that would have a positive and direct impact for thousands of Iowa families. The bill is timely as we await a ruling from the Iowa Supreme Court any day that could recognize the freedom to marry for committed gay and lesbian couples. In the meantime, we are encouraged when legislators and public officials step forward and voice full support for marriage equality.

As a supporter of marriage equality, you can keep up the momentum by contacting your elected officials to share your story and support for equality!

Our Work in Focus Organize your Community: Join your local steering committee!

Matt Skuya Regional Organizer

As our work for marriage equality moves forward, our success will rely heavily on the work that local supporters do in their own communities. With a limited amount of resources and organizers, we rely on people like you to carry our message and our campaign throughout the state. Our steering committees are designed to bring together supporters in each community who will work in coordination with One Iowa on our efforts, including our ongoing campaign for marriage equality. Sign up today if you are interested in joining or organizing a local steering committee.

Currently steering committees are established in the following communities: Mason City, Ames, Grinnell, Newton, Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls/Waterloo, Davenport, and Iowa City. We're working in other communities across the state to get additional steering committees off the ground. In the coming weeks, we'll rely more intensely on these networks to engage community members in our efforts. Penning letters to the editor, helping plan decision day rallies, organizing lobby efforts with local elected officials, acting as media spokespeople, and building grassroots support locally will all rely heavily on these steering committees. If you are interested in joining or organizing your local steering committee, please sign up today! We will follow-up with more information.

March 9 Iowa Independent: Bill makes marriage law gender neutral The point of the legislation would be to properly respond should the Iowa Supreme Court rule that the state’s Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. If that is the case, same-sex marriage would be legal in Iowa and the language in laws would have to reflect that. Wander into the state Capitol rotunda some Lobby Day and check out the citizen groups trying to get the ears of lawmakers. In recent weeks, you could have met the mother of a child with autism who is pressing for a ban on the use of mercury in vaccines. Or the people dressed in some orange article of clothing - socks, a T-shirt - urging action on a cure for multiple sclerosis. Or the father of a grown lesbian daughter approaching his legislators to make the case for same-sex marriage. *We want to know what you're reading!
