Waterloo supporters gather to mark anniversary

Wedding day photos of same-sex couples flashed across a screen Saturday night as marriage equality advocates filed into the Waterloo Center for the Arts.

Snapshots of John and Tom, Rosemary and Peggy, Juan and Vincent and dozens of other pairs set the scene for a night of celebration as supporters marked one year of same-sex marriage in Iowa.

Mixed in the slideshow was a photo of a wedding cake. "At Last!" it announced in blue icing, drawing applause from the more than 100 people in attendance.

"We did what many thought what was impossible, what most thought they would never see in their lifetimes," said Ryan Crane, a regional organizer with One Iowa, the state's largest gay rights advocacy organization. "What many thought was a little too much, a little too soon ensured thousands of loving, committed couples and their families had freedom, and all of our lives are better because of it."
