Our Work in Focus
With the recent oral arguments in front of the Iowa Supreme Court, we were all reminded that marriage equality is possible here in Iowa. With that, I was glad to hit the road and put together Town Hall events in Cedar Rapids and Davenport last month. We got to hear from people about questions and concerns they had regarding the case, and I realized that there are so many Iowans who believe in fairness for committed gay and lesbian couples. I love doing the work I do -- I always tell people that I am involved with the civil rights movement of my generation. The Supreme Court is likely to rule in the next few months, so I am doing everything I can to build grassroots support for marriage equality. Some of the cities I organize in are Dubuque, the Quad Cities, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Burlington, and Decorah. In the next week, I will be preparing for public forums in Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids, with additional forums in the near future. If you would like more information about the work One Iowa is doing in Eastern Iowa, please contact me at ryan@oneiowa.org. |

In the News Jan. 4 Cedar Rapids Gazette: Transsexuals deserve acceptance, not blame In the end, it is disheartening that Benedict chose to make his Christmas message not about promoting peace on Earth or goodwill toward men, but to signal out that transsexuals (already one of the world's most marginalized communities) are not worthy of respect and human compassion. Jan. 8 Des Moines Register: Work together, leaders, for Iowa's sake Those challenges make it more important than ever to set aside partisan bickering about divisive issues - whether it's gay marriage or the scope of bargaining for public-employee unions. Instead, focus on what can be done to limit damage to the state from inevitable budget cuts. Jan. 8 Des Moines Cityview: For better or worse December 2008 proved to be a stepping stone for same-sex couples as they took their case before the Iowa Supreme Court, arguing that Iowa's marriage law goes against the state's Constitution. Now that the issue is in the judiciary process, only time will tell, and months could pass before a decision is made. Upon waiting for a verdict, some lawmakers are proposing an amendment to the Iowa Constitution to limit marriage to one man and one woman. |
