RADICAL WATCH: THEY'LL STOP AT NOTHING
Phelps' Family Invades Iowa
In the same week that Chuck Hurley and the Iowa Family Policy Center warned "People will die" as a result of the freedom to marry in Iowa, Shirley Phelps, the daughter of famed Kansas hatemonger Fred Phelps, brought her special brand of hatred to Iowa.
The group of six protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church carried inflammatory signs, shouted down passersby, and sang hateful songs. Listen to this chilling audio clip of the group singing to the tune of John Denver's "Country Road".
Nearly 200 students and community members gathered in response to the Phelps' family visit at Lincoln High School to show their support for equality. The strong community response demonstrates that most Iowans reject intolerance, whether it comes from the Phelps' family or from the Iowa Family Policy Center. |

As an Iowan, mother and grandmother, I am proud of the way that we Iowans raise our families and how we respect one another. Iowans believe in treating one another with fairness. I've witnessed this throughout my life, most recently through the outpouring of support from family members, neighbors and friends who congratulated me on my engagement to Sue, my partner of nearly 20 years.

So basically, in their definition of the marriage institution, opponents believe it's acceptable to undermine vital judicial institutions that have served Iowans well since plows broke the prairie. They figure Iowans will buy this outlandish hooey. They're flat wrong.
KWWL, Iowa City: Soldiers can be discharged for gay marriage
Johnson County Recorder Kim Painter has never agreed with the "don't ask don't tell" rule. But for her, it's not all about gay rights.
"It weakens our defense," said Painter.
KTIV, Sioux City: 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy disqualifies gay married couples
A policy that One Iowa, thinks puts service men and women in an impossible situtation.
"Iowans serving honorably in the military should not have to choose between the protections of marriage and their dedication to serving our country," said Justin Uebelhor, Director of Communications, One Iowa.
