VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Cindy McConnell
by Matty Smith, Regional Field Organizer
Cindy McConnell says it’s a close bond with her daughter that keeps her working diligently for marriage equality, and keeps her coming back to One Iowa every week as a Blue Crew development volunteer.
“She and I are best friends,” Cindy said about her daughter Erin. Erin married her wife in 2009 after more than 10 years together, and the couple has two children.
“I think Erin’s very proud that I stand up for her rights," Cindy said. "We should all be supportive of each other’s civil rights.”
After the public hearing for House Joint Resolution 6—which the Iowa House passed in February—Cindy said she wanted to get more involved in the cause. She’s been volunteering ever since.
“I was so scared,” Cindy said. “I believe it’s a civil rights issue. To take that right away, that’s so worth defending. I just can’t imagine it.”
Shortly after the House passed HJR6, Cindy called One Iowa and offered her help. She said part of the reason she keeps coming back every week is the welcoming atmosphere.
Chad Russell, One Iowa’s development director, said he even learned a few things from Cindy about some of the database programs One Iowa uses. It’s Cindy’s attention to detail and her upbeat personality that make her a phenomenal volunteer, he said.
“Cindy is so dedicated and committed,” Chad said. “She inspires me to work harder to fulfill our mission.”
