Congratulations: John Sellers receives lifesaving award

One Iowa is proud to congratulate John Sellers, a longtime volunteer and supporter, on receiving the Lifesaving Award.

John was awarded for helping save a woman who was injured in a serious car accident.

Last year, John and his spouse Tom Helten came to the aid of a woman who lost control of her car and crashed into a ditch filled with water. While they were waiting for emergency crews to arrive, the car began filling up with water and started to slide down the cement culvert. John reached in through the driver's side window, grabbed the woman and pulled her out while pushing away from the vehicle to keep from getting pulled down with it.

For his heroic and selfless efforts, John was awarded at a ceremony held by Governor Terry Branstad. John and Tom attended the ceremony together.

"It was nice to take the opportunity to introduce Tom to Governor Branstad as my spouse," John said. "Maybe that will make Branstad think a little. You never know."
