Talk to Your Legislator

Tell your story! Your personal story is the most convincing tool we have to impact the hearts and minds of legislators. Gay or straight, married or straight, parent or student, Democrat or Republican – your story will make a difference!

Start with the basics – talk about where you live and work, tell him/her about organizations or groups you are involved with and if you are part of a faith community, talk about your children, parents, siblings, and your family, inform him/her of your connections to the community and how long you've lived there.

You should talk about the ups-and-downs of life – the joy of raising a child, the loss or illness of a partner, meeting or falling in love with your partner, the need to protect your child or family from harm, and everyday life as an LGBT Iowan or parent, sibling, or friend of an LGBT person. Talk about how you are impacted – directly or indirectly – by the lack of security, dignity, and safety net of protections for all families.

Meet your legislators or candidates for coffee, stop by their office, attend their weekend forum, or schedule a face-to-face meeting. Or call, email, or write your legislators or candidates and tell your story. Let your legislator or candidates know that you support equality and fairness for all Iowa families!
