Civil Rights Bill Passes
Fair Protection Extended to LGBT Iowans
Representatives of One Iowa applauded the passage of the Iowa Civil Rights Bill by the Iowa House.
"Today is a historic day for equality," said Carolyn Jenison, Executive Director. "The Iowa Legislature has sent a clear message: discrimination is not welcome in our state."
Jenison noted that traditional scare tactics had failed to derail the Civil Rights Bill. "There have been a handful of vocal opponents claiming this will cause drastic changes in businesses and schools. People have grown weary of these 'chicken little' tactics. Today the average Iowan knows that LGBT people are just like everyone else. It doesn't make sense to hold them back."
Jessica Brackett, Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator, spoke about One Iowa's work on behalf of this bill. "We'd like to extend heartfelt thanks to our volunteers for assisting in this monumental effort, and the legislators who were courageous enough to vote in favor of this bill."
One Iowa maintained phone banks in the weeks leading up to the House vote, educating constituents and asking them to take action.
The Civil Rights Bill adds "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to the Iowa Civil Rights Code. Once signed into law, Iowans can no longer be denied housing, education, or work simply because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. The bill will now move back to the Senate, where the House's changes will be considered. Once approved, it will then go to Governor Chet Culver, who is expected to sign.
One Iowa is dedicated to supporting full equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals living in Iowa through grassroots efforts and education.
